Types of Electronic Visas for Short Visit to Sri Lanka and reason of travel:

An intended traveller visiting Sri Lanka for a short stay for following purposes, must obtain ETA prior approval for their arrival.

The types of ETA:

 

  • ETA for Tourist purpose with double entry for 30 (thirty) days
  • ETA for Business purpose with double entry for 30 (thirty) days
  • ETA for Transit up to 02 days Free of Charge basis (Documentary proof needed)

 

 

 

1. e-Tourist Visa Information

 

The e-Tourist Visa for Sri Lanka is an official document and entry requirement to travel to and within Sri Lanka for any of the following reasons:

  • Sightseeing, holidaying
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment including Ayurvedic and yoga
  • Participate in sporting events, competitions and activities relating to cultural performance
  • At the arrival applicant may be granted 30 days ETA with double entry facility and double entries can be made from the date of initial arrival (Within given 30 days). The balance period of the 30 days of the initial entry will be granted for the second visit to Sri Lanka.

 

2. e-Business Visa Information:

 

The e-BusinessVisa for Sri Lanka is an official document and entry requirement to travel to and within Sri Lanka for any of the following reasons:

 

  • Participate in business meetings and negotiations
  • Participate in Conferences, workshops and seminars
  • To take part in Short term training programs (less than one month)
  • Participate in art, music and dance events
  • Participating in religious events
  • Participate in Symposium
  • Multiple, Double or single entry business ETA can be obtained from Sri Lanka Overseas Missions and the Visa Section of the Department of Immigration and Emigration , Colombo. The traveler should produce relevant documentary proof of his/her intent of Business purpose visit to Sri Lanka.

     

     

3. e-Transit Visa information:

 

The e-Transit Visa Information for Sri Lanka is granted to foreign nationals traveling to transiting through Sri Lanka.

ETA for Transit up to 02 days Free of Charge basis (Documentary proof needed).

At the arrival applicant may be granted 30 days ETA with double entry facility and double entries can be made from the date of initial arrival (Within given 30 days). The balance period of the 30 days of the initial entry will be granted for the second visit to Sri Lanka.

 

e-Visa Sri Lanka Instructions:

 

ETA is an official authorization for a Short Visit to Sri Lanka and is issued electronically. The ETA is introduced with the intention of providing an efficient, reliable and simplified service to those who visit Sri Lanka. ETA holders will be issued a 30 day Short Visit visa at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. The ETA will be effective from 1st of January 2012.

 

The ETA is issued through an on-line system. No passport copies, documents or photographs are required. There is no requirement to endorse the ETA on the passport.

 

On arrival at the port of entry in Sri Lanka

 

Upon arrival, produce your passport to the immigration officer at the port of entry to obtain the necessary clearance. It is advisable for you to bring a copy of the ETA approval notice along with you.

 

A visitor wishing to stay more than 30 days in Sri Lanka, may apply for an extension. The Short Visit visa may be extended up to 90 days from the date of arrival at the first instance and further 90 days at the second instance.

Application for an extension should be submitted to the Visa Section of the Department of Immigration (head office) by visiting the Department or through an Authorized Agent.

Nationals of the following countries who visit Sri Lanka for a Short Visit up to 30 days are exempt from ETA,

  • The Republic of Singapore.
  • The Republic of Maldives.
  • The Republic of Seychelles

Evidence requirements for e-Visas:

 

Submission of ETA application by Third Party.

 

If you are planning a Short Visit to Sri Lanka, you can obtain the services of a third party such as travel agents, airlines, friends, or relatives etc., to apply for an ETA on your behalf.

 

Steps to be followed:

 

Contact your preferred third party and advise them to lodge your ETA application.

 

The third party may pay the relevant ETA processing fee and submit your application. Only Visa, Master and American Express Cards are accepted. If the application is submitted successfully, an acknowledgement will be sent as requested in the application. View sample Acknowledgement.

 

Receive your ETA approval notice or referral notice. If a referral notice is served, you may contact Department of Immigration and Emigration for necessary assistance.

 

It is advisable to keep a copy of the ETA approval with you to be produced at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. All ETA holders should fulfill the following requirements at the port of entry.

 

  • A passport valid for not less than 6 months from the date of arrival.
  • A confirmed return ticket.
  • Sufficient funds to meet the expenses during the stay.

The ETA is initially limited to 30 days from the date of arrival but it can be extended for up to six months.

 

 

Visa Extension Application:

 

How can I renew my tourist visa?

 

Every bona-fide tourist who enters Sri Lanka within the period of the landing permit granted by the Immigration officials at the port of entry can apply for a visa extension before the expiry of the visa. Two (02) months extension beyond 30 days shall be granted at the Department of Immigration Emigration (Head Office) . However further extension shall only be considered with valid reasons. This restriction will not be applicable to Ex-Sri Lankans.


What are the documents I need to extend the visit visa?


The person who obtained short term visit visa should obtain Electronic Travel Authorization ( ETA) before entering the country. No foreigner should enter into Sri Lanka until he/she obtains ETA.


Tourist visa

Address and the telephone number of the place of accommodation. (hotel vouchers and bills)

The application along with the photograph of the applicant.

* It is compulsory for the applicant to be present to collect the visa.

 

Business visa

The request letter submitted by the business institute to extend the business visa.
